How Much Can You Earn from Your Closet?

Your closet can be a side hustle — but how much you keep depends on the model. This page explains how Pickle pays lenders and how other common approaches compare in general terms.

On Pickle, lenders are making thousands a month — and some tens of thousands — renting and selling pieces from their closets. You could use your earnings to reinvest in your wardrobe, help cover rent, fund a passion project, or treat yourself to a fun night out.

How Pickle pays you

Pickle is peer-to-peer: you upload once, set rental and buy prices, and approve offers yourself. Earnings accumulate as Closet Cash in your Pickle balance and can be transferred to your bank via Stripe (see help center: “My Earnings”). On completed rentals, Pickle applies a marketplace fee of 20% of the rental price, with a $3.00 minimum per transaction. Purchase/sale fee terms are not quoted here — check the app when you list an item for buy.

Unlike sell-only marketplaces, you can rent a piece multiple times before marking it for sale — without photographing and listing it again somewhere else.

Other ways people try to monetize a closet

Peer-to-peer resale apps

Most resale apps take a commission when your item sells, plus payment processing. You control listing, pricing, and shipping — but you typically list to sell only, not to rent the same piece from one upload.

Consignment and clean-out services

Consignment takes a larger cut of the sale and you wait for the platform to authenticate, price, and sell. Clean-out bag services often charge a per-bag fee and pay a percentage of what they accept — better for volume clear-outs than maximizing margin on a single dress.

Rental subscriptions

Monthly rental subscriptions charge you a membership fee to borrow from a company’s inventory. You do not earn from your own closet on those services — they are for renting in, not lending out.

Common questions

What do Pickle lenders do with their earnings?
It varies — but lenders on Pickle are making thousands per month, and some tens of thousands, from rentals and sales combined. Many owners reinvest in their closet, help cover rent, launch passion-project businesses, or treat themselves to a fun night out. How much you earn depends on your closet, pricing, and demand.

Earnings depend on your pricing, demand, and how often pieces rent or sell. Pickle purchase fees are omitted here where not published in product documentation — verify current terms in the app before listing.
